Description
A masterful 1897 mezzotint by Sir Frank Short, capturing the atmospheric silhouette of Stonehenge at dawn based on a composition by J.M.W. Turner.
Sir Frank Short, a master of the printmaking medium, produced this mezzotint in 1897. The work is based on a composition by J.M.W. Turner, originally intended for the Liber Studiorum. Short was instrumental in the late nineteenth-century revival of etching and mezzotint in Britain, and his technical precision allowed him to translate the atmospheric qualities of Turner's original watercolour into a monochromatic tonal range. The image depicts the ancient monument of Stonehenge silhouetted against a dramatic, cloud-filled sky at dawn. In the foreground, a horse-drawn cart moves along a track, accompanied by figures and a flock of sheep. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, heavy forms of the cart and the distant, monolithic stones, which appear as faint shapes against the emerging light. The mezzotint process, which involves working from dark to light, is particularly suited to this subject. It allows for the soft, velvety blacks and the subtle gradations of grey that define the morning light. Short's work demonstrates a high degree of control over the copper plate. The sky is rendered with sweeping, fluid motions that suggest the movement of clouds, while the ground remains grounded in deep, earthy tones. This print captures the quiet, melancholic atmosphere of the Salisbury Plain. It reflects the Victorian interest in British antiquities and the romanticised view of the rural past. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow, Short creates a sense of scale and temporal distance. The print remains a fine example of the collaborative nature of nineteenth-century printmaking, where the engraver acted as both interpreter and craftsman for the original painter's vision.
