A detailed oil painting by Gerardina Jacoba van de Sande Bakhuyzen, featuring a harvest arrangement of squash, grapes, and flowers on a stone ledge.
Gerardina Jacoba van de Sande Bakhuyzen was a prominent member of a Dutch family of painters, known for her technical precision in depicting botanical subjects. This composition, titled Stilleven met bloemen en vruchten, demonstrates her ability to balance naturalistic observation with the structured traditions of nineteenth-century Dutch still life painting.
The work features a stone ledge laden with an assortment of seasonal produce and flora. A central, textured squash sits amongst clusters of pale green grapes, while smaller fruits and mossy elements occupy the left side of the frame. The foreground is dominated by a cascade of flowers, including hollyhocks and dark, velvety blooms that provide a contrast to the lighter tones of the fruit. The artist employs a muted, earthy palette, allowing the subtle variations in light to define the forms of the produce and the delicate petals of the flowers.
Behind the ledge, the scene transitions into a soft, atmospheric background, suggesting an outdoor setting or a garden terrace. The foliage above creates a canopy, framing the arrangement and adding a sense of depth to the composition. Van de Sande Bakhuyzen avoids excessive ornamentation, choosing instead to focus on the textures of the objects, from the waxy skin of the grapes to the rough, irregular surface of the squash. Her approach reflects the nineteenth-century interest in the careful study of nature, presented with a clarity that remains accessible to the viewer. The painting captures a moment of harvest, balancing the weight of the fruit with the ephemeral quality of the cut flowers. This work is representative of the artist's career, during which she gained recognition for her disciplined technique and her focus on the natural world.
