A 1919 still life by Moïse Kisling, featuring a patterned white pitcher and apples arranged on a blue-draped table.
Moïse Kisling, a central figure of the School of Paris, produced this still life in 1919. The composition features a white pitcher decorated with blue leaf motifs, positioned alongside a plate containing three apples. The artist employs a structured approach to form, typical of his work during this period, where objects possess a sculptural quality. The background is divided into distinct planes of colour, with a deep brown fabric on the left and a dark teal surface on the right, which creates a sense of spatial depth behind the central objects.
The palette is deliberate, balancing the cool tones of the blue-patterned ceramics and the light blue table covering against the warmer hues of the fruit and the draped fabric. Kisling, who moved to Paris from Kraków in 1910, was influenced by the avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century, yet he maintained a focus on traditional subjects like the still life. His technique here involves clear outlines and a controlled application of paint, which gives the objects a tangible, solid presence. The arrangement is simple, yet the interaction between the rounded forms of the fruit and the verticality of the pitcher demonstrates a careful consideration of balance and geometry.
This work reflects the artist's ability to synthesise modern sensibilities with classical subject matter. The clean lines and the deliberate placement of the pitcher and plate suggest an interest in the formal properties of the objects themselves, rather than a purely decorative intent. The painting remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities held by artists working in Montparnasse during the interwar years, where clarity of form and a refined colour sense were highly valued.
