Ilya Mashkov was a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, a collective of Russian artists who rejected academic traditions in favour of a more robust, painterly approach. This work displays the characteristic energy of his early period, where he combined the influence of Paul Cézanne with the bold, decorative sensibilities of Russian folk art. The composition is anchored by a heavy, physical presence of objects, rendered with thick, tactile brushwork that emphasises the materiality of the fruit, the glass, and the crustacean. Mashkov often utilised a saturated palette to create a sense of abundance.
