Description
A Russian Impressionist still life by Konstantin Korovin featuring a dark vase and fruit. The work uses thick, gestural brushstrokes and a palette of earthy tones to capture light on a tabletop.
Konstantin Korovin was a central figure in the development of Russian Impressionism. This composition features a dark, rounded vase positioned beside a collection of peaches and grapes. The objects sit upon a table, likely located on a veranda, as suggested by the green wooden slats of a chair in the background. Korovin uses broad, visible brushstrokes to define form rather than relying on precise outlines. The application of paint is thick and gestural, which creates a sense of immediacy in the scene. The colour palette relies on earthy tones contrasted with deep greens and the dark silhouette of the central vessel. Light reflects off the surface of the vase in two distinct white patches, suggesting a nearby window or an outdoor light source. The fruit is rendered with dabs of orange and yellow paint, while the grapes appear as clusters of dark, heavy marks. This approach to still life focuses on the atmospheric quality of the setting and the way light interacts with different surfaces. Korovin studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Alexei Savrasov and Vasily Polenov. His work moved away from the narrative focus of his predecessors towards a sensory experience of the world. This piece demonstrates his interest in the decorative possibilities of oil paint. The arrangement of objects feels spontaneous, capturing a specific moment through a loose and expressive technique.
