A masterful seventeenth-century still life by Clara Peeters, featuring a detailed arrangement of seafood, cheese, and bread against a dark background.
Clara Peeters is a significant figure in the development of the Dutch and Flemish still life tradition. This composition demonstrates her technical precision in rendering textures, from the translucent shell of the shrimp to the porous surface of the stacked cheeses. The arrangement follows the 'ontbijtje' or breakfast piece format, popular in the early seventeenth century, which brought together luxury food items and fine tableware.
Peeters places a large lobster, a crab, and a bowl of shrimp at the centre of the table. These items are accompanied by wheels of cheese, bread, and a selection of eggs. The dark background ensures the focus remains on the objects, allowing the artist to manipulate light to define the form and volume of each element. Her use of a limited, muted palette allows the orange tones of the seafood to stand out against the grey and blue hues of the tablecloth and the shadows.
Beyond the culinary display, the work contains subtle details that reveal the artist's skill. The reflection in the metal vessels and the careful placement of the knife suggest a high degree of control over the pictorial space. Peeters often included her own likeness in the reflections of her metalwork, a signature practice that connects the viewer to the artist's presence. This painting is a representative example of how seventeenth-century artists used the still life genre to demonstrate their ability to capture the material world with accuracy and restraint.
