Giovanna Garzoni was a master of botanical and zoological observation during the seventeenth century. This work, executed in tempera on vellum, demonstrates her technical precision and her ability to capture the textures of the natural world. The composition features a bee-eater alongside goldfinches, arranged amongst a selection of fruit including pears, plums, and a fig. Garzoni utilised a stippling technique, applying tiny dots of pigment to build up form and shadow.
