Ilya Mashkov, a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, produced this study of a thistle during a period when his work moved away from academic constraints towards a more tactile, painterly approach. The composition centres on a single, robust burdock plant, rendered with thick, deliberate brushwork that emphasises the physical presence of the subject against the expansive, sun-bleached backdrop of the Russian steppe. Mashkov employs a palette dominated by ochre, gold, and muted earth tones to represent the dry grasses of the plains. In contrast, the thistle itself is constructed from cooler blues, deep greens, and touches of magenta. This colour choice creates a visual tension, pulling the plant forward from the background and giving it a sculptural quality. The paint application is heavy and textured, reflecting the artist's interest in the material properties of oil paint and his rejection of smooth, illusionistic surfaces. Unlike his later, more formal still-life compositions, this work captures a specific moment of observation in the open air. The brushstrokes are energetic and direct, showing the influence of Cézanne and the Fauvist interest in non-naturalistic colour. The plant is not merely a botanical subject, but a vehicle for exploring light, form, and the rugged character of the Russian environment.
