Vincent van Gogh's *Starry Night Over the Rhône*, painted in Arles in 1888, depicts the night sky and the reflections of gas lamps in the Rhône river, rendered with his signature impasto technique.
Painted in 1888 during Vincent van Gogh's stay in Arles, France, *Starry Night Over the Rhône* captures the illuminated night sky and the reflections of gas lamps in the Rhône river. Van Gogh lived in Arles from February 1888 to May 1889, a period marked by intense artistic activity and emotional turbulence. This painting is one of several notable works he created during this time, including *The Yellow House* and *Café Terrace at Night*. The composition is divided horizontally, with the sky dominating the upper half and the river occupying the lower half. The stars, rendered with thick, swirling brushstrokes, appear to pulsate with light. Their reflections shimmer on the water's surface, creating a sense of movement and energy. The gas lamps lining the riverbank cast warm, yellow glows that contrast with the cool blues and purples of the night sky. In the foreground, two figures stroll along the riverbank, adding a human element to the scene. Van Gogh's use of impasto, applying paint thickly to the canvas, gives the painting a tactile quality and enhances the luminosity of the colours. The painting is now part of the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
