A delicate watercolour illustration of a standing king from the personal album of Dutch artist Gesina ter Borch, dating to the seventeenth century.
This delicate illustration originates from the personal album of Gesina ter Borch, a talented amateur artist from the Dutch Golden Age. The work depicts a standing king, rendered with fine ink lines and soft watercolour washes. The figure is positioned in the lower right corner of a page filled with handwritten Dutch verse, demonstrating the common seventeenth-century practice of combining poetry with visual imagery in private albums.
Gesina ter Borch was the sister of the painter Gerard ter Borch. Her artistic output consists largely of these intimate, small-scale drawings that document the social and cultural life of her circle. The figure of the king is stylised, wearing a crown and a short tunic with a flowing cloak, holding a sceptre. The composition is sparse, leaving significant negative space on the page to accommodate the calligraphic text. This arrangement reflects the aesthetic of the period, where the interplay between literature and visual art was a primary mode of expression for the educated Dutch middle class.
The drawing exhibits a light, precise touch characteristic of Ter Borch's work. Her use of colour is restrained, focusing on the blue of the tunic and the muted tones of the cloak and crown. By preserving the original page layout, this print captures the historical context of the album, offering a glimpse into the domestic creative habits of the Dutch Republic. The work is not a formal portrait but rather a narrative or allegorical element within the broader context of the manuscript, showing the artist's ability to integrate character studies into a literary framework.
