A scene from the life of Saint Francis, this fresco depicts the miraculous appearance of the saint to a group of friars in Arles.
This fresco is part of the cycle depicting the life of Saint Francis, located within the Upper Church of the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. The scene illustrates a miraculous event where Saint Francis appears to Saint Anthony of Padua while he is preaching to a group of friars in Arles. Giotto employs a clear, architectural structure to organise the composition, using a series of arches to define the interior space where the monks are gathered.
The figures are rendered with a sense of physical presence that departed from the flatter, more stylised Byzantine traditions common in the period. Saint Anthony stands at the centre, his arms raised in a gesture of surprise or revelation, while the monks are seated in two rows, their backs to the viewer. This arrangement creates a sense of depth and invites the observer into the room. The colour palette remains muted, relying on earth tones, ochres, and soft greys, which are characteristic of the fresco technique used in the late thirteenth century.
Giotto focuses on the human reaction to the supernatural event. The monks display varied postures and expressions, suggesting individual responses to the apparition. The architectural setting, while simplified, provides a logical framework for the narrative. This work demonstrates the shift towards naturalism and spatial awareness that defined the artist's approach to religious storytelling. The focus is on the clarity of the action and the emotional resonance of the figures, rather than decorative detail. The composition remains balanced, with the central figure of Saint Anthony acting as the anchor for the surrounding group.
