A delicate pastel portrait by Rosalba Carriera, capturing an allegorical figure of Spring with soft textures and refined colour.
Rosalba Carriera was a central figure in the development of pastel as a primary medium for portraiture during the eighteenth century. Her work, including this depiction of Spring, demonstrates the technical precision and soft atmospheric quality that defined her practice in Venice and across European courts. Carriera moved away from the heavy oil techniques common to the period, favouring the immediacy and delicate blending capabilities of pastel sticks.
In this composition, the subject represents the season through a gentle, allegorical gesture. She holds a small flower to her nose, a classic motif used to signify the sensory experience of spring. The figure is draped in a deep blue fabric, which provides a contrast to the pale, luminous skin tones rendered with subtle gradations of colour. The background remains dark and indistinct, a common choice for Carriera, which ensures the viewer focuses entirely on the subject's expression and the tactile quality of the flowers she carries.
Carriera was instrumental in popularising the Rococo style, which prioritised grace, lightness, and a refined aesthetic. Her ability to capture the texture of skin and the softness of fabric through dry pigment on paper earned her commissions from the most elite patrons of her time. This work is part of a series of allegorical representations of the seasons, a popular theme in eighteenth-century decorative art. The soft focus and the gentle tilt of the head are characteristic of her approach to portraiture, which sought to convey a sense of intimacy and natural charm. By avoiding harsh outlines, she achieved a lifelike quality that remains a hallmark of her contribution to Venetian art history.
