A 1786 political satire etching by Johannes Jelgerhuis depicting a confrontation between Prince William V and a Dutch farmer.
This etching from 1786 captures the intense political climate of the Dutch Republic during the Patriot era. The composition depicts a confrontation between Prince William V of Orange and a Gelderland farmer. The Prince, dressed in military attire, attempts to seize the farmer's meal, a visual metaphor for the perceived exploitation of the common people by the ruling house. The farmer sits firmly at his table, resisting the intrusion, which reflects the growing defiance of the Patriot faction against the Stadtholder.
Johannes Jelgerhuis employs a direct, illustrative style common in the political broadsides of the late eighteenth century. The scene is rendered with clear, descriptive lines that focus on the narrative interaction between the two figures. The interior setting is sparse, keeping the viewer's attention on the power dynamic. Below the image, the text provides a polemical dialogue, framing the farmer as a Batavian defender of his ancestral land against the perceived tyranny of the Prince. The work serves as a historical document of the ideological conflicts that preceded the Batavian Revolution.
As a piece of graphic propaganda, the print utilises caricature to communicate complex political grievances to a broad audience. The contrast between the farmer's humble sustenance and the Prince's aggressive posture is deliberate, designed to evoke sympathy for the Patriot cause. This print is a characteristic example of the visual culture that circulated in the Netherlands during this period, where art functioned as a tool for public debate and political mobilisation. The stark black and white aesthetic emphasises the moral clarity sought by the artist, presenting the conflict as a struggle between the rights of the citizen and the authority of the state.
