Description
A delicate study of three sparrows in flight, rendered in ink and colour on silk by the master of Kacho-ga, Watanabe Seitei.
Watanabe Seitei, also known as Watanabe Shotei, was a master of the Kacho-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. This work captures three sparrows in mid-flight against a neutral, unadorned background. The composition relies on the negative space of the silk support to suggest the vastness of the sky, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the movement and posture of the birds. Seitei was trained in the Kikuchi Yosai school, yet he integrated Western watercolour techniques into his practice. This approach is visible in the soft, modulated washes of brown and grey ink used to define the plumage of the sparrows. He avoids the rigid outlines common in earlier traditional Japanese painting, opting instead for a more fluid, observational style that captures the fleeting nature of the subjects. The birds are depicted in varied stages of flight, creating a sense of rhythm and progression across the vertical frame. His ability to observe natural behaviour is evident in the precise positioning of the wings and the alert expressions of the birds. The work is signed and sealed in the lower left corner, consistent with his practice of marking his compositions. By stripping away extraneous details, Seitei directs attention to the mechanics of flight and the subtle colour variations of the sparrows. This piece reflects the transition in Japanese art during the Meiji period, where traditional subjects were re-examined through a lens of increased naturalism and technical experimentation. The use of silk as a medium provides a soft, matte finish that complements the delicate application of pigment, resulting in a balanced and quiet aesthetic.
