An early eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I, featuring a sparrowhawk and a macaw rendered with bold, calligraphic lines.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I depicts a sparrowhawk perched above a caged macaw. The composition follows the conventions of early Ukiyo-e, specifically the Kacho-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. The artist employs bold, calligraphic lines to define the forms of the birds, a technique characteristic of the Torii school, which was closely associated with the kabuki theatre of Edo-period Japan.
The sparrowhawk occupies the upper portion of the frame, its feathers rendered with rhythmic, repetitive patterns that suggest texture and volume. Below, the macaw is positioned within a suspended perch, its form simplified yet distinct. The print features hand-applied colour, typical of the tan-e (red-lead) prints produced during this era. The palette remains restrained, relying on earthy tones and the warm, aged quality of the paper to provide a sense of historical presence.
Torii Kiyomasu I was a central figure in the early development of the Ukiyo-e style. His work often displays a graphic quality that prioritises clear outlines and balanced arrangements over atmospheric depth. This print demonstrates his ability to combine observation of natural subjects with the stylised aesthetic favoured by the urban population of Edo. The interaction between the two birds, separated by the physical structure of the perch, creates a narrative tension that is both subtle and effective. The work remains a clear example of the technical and stylistic priorities of the early eighteenth-century Japanese print tradition, where the focus rested on the expressive power of the line and the decorative potential of the subject matter.
