A serene woodblock print by Hasui Kawase depicting a snowy evening on the Sumida River, capturing the quiet atmosphere of winter in 1930s Tokyo.
Hasui Kawase produced Snow at Mukojima in 1931, a period when the Shin-hanga movement sought to revitalise traditional Japanese woodblock printing by incorporating Western techniques of light and atmospheric perspective. This work captures a quiet evening along the Sumida River in Tokyo. The composition focuses on the stillness of the water and the heavy accumulation of snow on the moored boats and nearby structures. The artist employs a restricted palette of deep blues, greys, and whites to convey the cold temperature of the scene. Small touches of warm light emanate from the windows of the riverside building, providing a contrast to the surrounding gloom. The falling snow is rendered through a technique of white speckling against the dark background, which creates a sense of depth and movement. A lone figure in a small boat, holding a pale umbrella, serves as the only sign of human activity, reinforcing the isolation of the winter night. Kawase worked closely with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo to ensure the technical quality of his prints. The layering of colours in this piece demonstrates the precision required to achieve the subtle gradients in the sky and the reflective surface of the river. By focusing on specific locations and weather conditions, Kawase documented the changing appearance of Japan during the early twentieth century. This print remains a representative example of his ability to evoke a specific mood through careful observation of natural phenomena and architectural detail.
