A dynamic watercolour study of three blacksmiths at work, capturing the physical intensity and atmosphere of a nineteenth-century forge.
Pieter de Josselin de Jong was a Dutch painter known for his focus on the working class and industrial subjects. This watercolour, titled Smederij, captures the physical exertion of labourers within a smithy. The composition centres on three figures engaged in the rhythmic process of metalworking. One figure operates the forge, while two others wield hammers, their bodies captured in mid-motion. The artist employs a muted palette of greys, blues, and earthy tones to convey the atmosphere of the workshop. The wash technique allows for a sense of haze and steam, suggesting the heat and intensity of the environment.
De Josselin de Jong often depicted the realities of late nineteenth-century labour. His approach avoids romanticisation, preferring instead to document the posture and movement of the workers. The figures are rendered with fluid, calligraphic strokes that define their forms without relying on heavy outlines. The background remains largely suggested, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the men and their tools. This work reflects the broader interest in social realism that occupied many European artists during this period. It provides a glimpse into the manual trades that powered the industrial era. The paper texture remains visible beneath the watercolour, adding a tactile quality to the scene. This print offers a clear view of the artist's technique, showing how he balanced precise observation with the spontaneous nature of the medium.
