Description
A detailed sixteenth-century engraving of the Ottoman statesman Sinan Pasha, framed by decorative Mannerist motifs and military symbols.
This engraving depicts Sinan Pasha, a prominent Ottoman statesman and military commander. Produced by the Flemish printmaker Dominicus Custos, the work reflects the European fascination with Ottoman figures during the late sixteenth century. The portrait is contained within a formal oval frame, a common convention for portraiture of the period, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's features and his distinctive turban. The surrounding composition employs a decorative framework typical of Northern Mannerist printmaking. Flanking the central oval are architectural elements adorned with grotesque masks, while the base features a cartouche containing the names of the inventor, Georgius Wickgram, and the publisher, Dominicus Custos. The inclusion of military accoutrements, such as swords and banners, serves to denote the subject's status as a Bassa, or Pasha. Above the portrait, two scales are suspended, a symbolic inclusion that often appeared in contemporary depictions of Ottoman officials to represent justice or administrative authority. Custos, who was active in Augsburg, was known for his technical precision in copperplate engraving. His work often involved the reproduction of portraits for historical and biographical collections. The line work here is controlled and methodical, utilising cross-hatching to create volume in the subject's robes and depth within the architectural surround. The print provides a clear example of how European artists of the late Renaissance period visualised figures from the Ottoman Empire, blending accurate observation of costume with established Western heraldic and decorative motifs. This piece is a representative example of the print culture that circulated information about global figures across early modern Europe.
