A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Anthonie Waterloo, depicting a peaceful rural scene with a shepherd resting near a wooded knoll.
Anthonie Waterloo was a prominent Dutch etcher and painter during the seventeenth century. His work focuses on the natural world, specifically the wooded areas surrounding Utrecht. This etching demonstrates his technical mastery of the medium, using varied line weights to create depth and texture within the foliage. The composition centres on a quiet, rural scene where a shepherd rests upon a small hill, accompanied by grazing livestock. A rustic wooden fence divides the foreground from the dense thicket of trees that dominates the middle ground.
Waterloo employs a sophisticated range of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the bark of the large trees and the soft, uneven terrain of the knoll. The sky remains relatively clear, allowing the focus to stay on the organic forms of the forest edge. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured dramatic light, Waterloo prefers a balanced, naturalistic approach. The scene captures a moment of stillness, reflecting the artist's interest in the quiet observation of the Dutch countryside. His ability to render the specific character of different tree species, from the gnarled trunks to the delicate leaves, is evident throughout the print. The inscription at the base, 'Antonius Waterlo inventor et fecit', confirms his role as both the designer and the printmaker. This work provides a clear example of the seventeenth-century Dutch tradition of printmaking, where the observation of nature was elevated to a primary subject. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, maintaining the fine detail and tonal range of the original etching.
