A powerful 1920 expressionist etching by Walter Gramatté, capturing a raw, emotive embrace through bold, rhythmic lines and high-contrast mark-making.
This etching by Walter Gramatté, titled Sheet IV, Mary and the Drum Major Embrace, originates from the artist's early period of production in 1920. Gramatté, a central figure within the German Expressionist movement, utilised the medium of printmaking to convey raw emotional states and psychological tension. The work depicts two figures locked in a tight, almost claustrophobic embrace. The lines are heavy and deliberate, characteristic of the artist's graphic style, which prioritises emotional resonance over anatomical precision.
The composition is dominated by the swirling, rhythmic lines that surround the figures, creating a sense of movement and instability. The background is not a static space but rather an active element that seems to press in on the subjects. Gramatté often explored themes of human connection, suffering, and the existential anxieties prevalent in post-war Germany. His approach to the etching plate involves deep biting and expressive mark-making, which results in a high-contrast image that commands attention through its stark simplicity.
As a practitioner of the New Objectivity and Expressionist circles, Gramatté maintained a focus on the subjective experience. This print demonstrates his ability to distil a complex interpersonal moment into a series of bold, graphic gestures. The figures are rendered with minimal detail, yet their posture and the surrounding atmosphere communicate a sense of urgency and intensity. The work is signed and numbered by the artist, reflecting the standard practices of the period for limited edition fine art prints. This piece offers a glimpse into the graphic output of an artist whose career was cut short, yet who contributed significantly to the visual language of the early twentieth century.
