A raw, emotive etching by German Expressionist Walter Gramatté, depicting a mother and child through sharp, agitated lines and high-contrast forms.
Walter Gramatté was a significant figure within the German Expressionist movement, known for his raw, emotive approach to printmaking. This work, titled 'Sheet III, Mary with the Boy in Her Arms', dates to 1925. It demonstrates the artist's characteristic use of jagged, urgent lines to convey psychological weight rather than anatomical precision.
The composition focuses on the central figures of a woman and a child. Gramatté employs a stark, high-contrast technique typical of his etching practice. The surrounding space is filled with agitated, swirling lines that seem to press inward upon the figures, creating a sense of claustrophobia or intense emotional enclosure. The faces are rendered with minimal detail, yet they communicate a heavy, melancholic mood through the placement of deep, dark shadows and sharp, angular strokes.
Gramatté often explored themes of human suffering, isolation, and the fragility of life. His work frequently reflects the turbulent social climate of post-First World War Germany. In this print, the maternal subject is stripped of traditional religious iconography, appearing instead as a vulnerable, human presence. The texture of the etching plate is visible in the background, where ink splatters and surface marks remain, adding to the unrefined, immediate quality of the image. This piece provides a clear example of how Expressionist artists used the medium of print to externalise internal states of mind, favouring subjective experience over objective representation.
