A modernist depiction of a shaman in a white robe, set against a stylised, rocky Hawaiian landscape by Arman Manookian.
Arman Manookian, an artist of Armenian descent who spent his brief career in Hawaii, produced this work during the late 1920s. The painting depicts a solitary figure, identified as a shaman, standing amidst a stylised, rocky terrain. The composition relies on clear, defined forms and a deliberate colour palette, which separates the subject from the background through contrast. The figure wears a long, white robe and a wide-brimmed hat, holding a small object in their hands. The surrounding environment features jagged, dark purple rock formations and unusual, rounded plant life that appears almost sculptural in its execution.
Manookian was known for his ability to synthesise the visual elements of the Hawaiian environment with a modernist sensibility. His approach to painting often involved simplifying shapes and using flat planes of colour to create a sense of stillness. This work reflects his interest in the cultural narratives of the Pacific, presenting a figure that exists outside of a specific temporal context. The sky is rendered in soft, muted tones, providing a calm backdrop to the more dramatic, angular forms of the ground. The artist's technique here avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the silhouette and the presence of the individual within the space. By using a limited range of hues, Manookian directs the viewer's attention to the central figure, whose posture and expression suggest a moment of quiet contemplation or ritual. This piece remains a representative example of his brief but productive period in Honolulu, where he captured the unique atmosphere of the islands through a lens of early twentieth-century modernism.
