A detailed 1758 self-portrait etching by German artist Georg Friedrich Schmidt, capturing the engraver at his desk in Saint Petersburg.
This self-portrait by Georg Friedrich Schmidt, executed in 1758 during his time in Saint Petersburg, offers a glimpse into the life of an eighteenth-century printmaker. Schmidt, a German artist who spent several years in Russia as a court engraver, depicts himself in a moment of quiet industry. He sits at a desk, pen in hand, with a focused expression that suggests the concentration required for his craft. The composition is dense with personal items, including a violin, a sword, and a bottle, which provide context for his interests and status.
Technically, the work demonstrates Schmidt's mastery of the etching needle. He employs a variety of line weights to define the textures of his clothing, the wooden surface of the desk, and the soft light filtering through the window. The window itself reveals a distant view of a Russian landscape, complete with a spider web in the corner, adding a layer of domestic detail to the scene. The inscription at the base, 'Se ipse fecit aqua forti Petropol 1758', confirms the location and the medium, noting that he made the work himself using acid in Saint Petersburg.
Schmidt was known for his technical precision and his ability to capture the likeness of his subjects with clarity. In this self-portrait, he avoids excessive idealisation, choosing instead to present a realistic image of himself at work. The play of light and shadow across his face and hands draws the viewer into the intimate space of his studio. This print remains a valuable record of the artist's skill and his period of residence in the Russian capital, reflecting the mobility of artists across Europe during the eighteenth century.
