This cityscape by Maximilien Luce captures a bustling scene along the Seine River in Paris. Executed in the Neo-Impressionist style, the painting uses small brushstrokes of colour to create a vibrant and luminous effect.
Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was a French Neo-Impressionist artist known for his paintings, illustrations, engravings, and graphic art. He was a prominent figure in the Parisian art scene and a member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants. His work often depicted urban scenes, industrial landscapes, and scenes of working-class life. Luce's style is characterised by its use of pointillism, a technique where small, distinct dots of colour are applied in patterns to form an image. This method creates a luminous effect and a sense of movement. He was influenced by Camille Pissarro and Georges Seurat. 'Seinequai in Paris' captures a bustling scene along the Seine River. The painting is composed of small, individual brushstrokes of colour, creating a shimmering effect across the canvas. The buildings lining the quai are rendered with a mix of warm and cool tones, while the sky is filled with dynamic cloud formations. Figures populate the foreground, their forms suggested by quick, expressive strokes. The overall impression is one of a vibrant, lively city on a cloudy day.
