A classic portrait by Amedeo Modigliani, featuring his characteristic elongated form and warm, expressive colour palette.
Amedeo Modigliani produced this study of a seated figure during his time in Paris, where he developed a distinct visual language characterised by elongated forms and simplified facial features. The subject is rendered with the artist's signature approach to anatomy, featuring a slender neck and an oval face that draws from both African mask traditions and the Italian Renaissance masters he studied in his youth. The figure occupies a space defined by a dark, atmospheric background, which forces the viewer to focus entirely on the subject. Modigliani uses a warm, ochre-toned palette for the skin, contrasting with the deep blues and shadows surrounding the sitter. The brushwork is deliberate, showing a balance between smooth transitions and visible texture that gives the surface a tactile quality. The pose, with the head tilted downwards, suggests a moment of introspection or quietude, a common theme in his portraiture. Modigliani often worked with a limited range of models, frequently friends or acquaintances from the Montparnasse artistic circle. His method involved a rapid execution that captured the essence of the sitter rather than a photographic likeness. By reducing the figure to its essential lines and curves, he achieved a sense of harmony and rhythm. This print captures the specific tonal qualities of the original oil painting, preserving the interplay between the warm flesh tones and the cool, dark environment. It remains a representative example of his mature style, created in the years leading up to his early death in 1920.
