A detailed circular engraving of Saint Jude Thaddaeus by Dutch artist Zacharias Dolendo, created in the late sixteenth century.
This circular engraving by Zacharias Dolendo depicts Saint Jude Thaddaeus, one of the twelve apostles. The work is part of a series of apostolic portraits, reflecting the technical precision common in late sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking. Dolendo, a skilled engraver active in Leiden, worked from designs by Jacques de Gheyn II, whose influence is visible in the structured approach to the figure and the deliberate use of cross-hatching to define form.
The saint is shown in a half-length profile, gazing towards the left. He holds a book in his left hand, while a square-shaped tool rests against his chest. The composition is contained within a circular border, which features Latin text identifying the subject as 'S. IVDAS IACOBI APOSTOL. DICTVS ETIAM THADDAVS'. The background consists of a fine, dense grid of horizontal and vertical lines, which creates a sense of depth and focus on the central figure. The musculature of the saint is rendered with anatomical clarity, typical of the Mannerist interest in the human form during this period.
Dolendo's technique demonstrates a high level of control over the burin. The lines are clean and precise, allowing for subtle gradations of shadow across the saint's face and drapery. The inclusion of the square, often associated with builders or architects, serves as an attribute for the saint. This print provides a clear example of the collaborative nature of print production in the Netherlands at the time, where designers and engravers worked in close proximity to produce works for a growing market of collectors and religious institutions. The clarity of the line work ensures that the image remains legible and visually engaging, even centuries after its creation.
