A detailed 18th-century etching by Andrea Zucchi, reproducing a Venetian painting of Saint George and Saint Louis.
This print by Andrea Zucchi is a reproduction of a painting by Tintoretto, originally located in the Magistrato del Sale in Venice. The composition depicts the legendary rescue of the princess by Saint George, accompanied by Saint Louis. Zucchi, a Venetian engraver, demonstrates technical precision in his translation of the original painterly style into the linear language of printmaking.
Saint George stands centrally, clad in armour, gesturing towards the princess who kneels at his feet. A dragon lies defeated beneath her, its form rendered with careful attention to texture. To the right, Saint Louis stands in ecclesiastical robes, holding a crozier. The background is kept relatively simple, allowing the figures to occupy the primary visual space. The arching top of the frame suggests a niche or architectural setting, common in Venetian decorative schemes of the period.
The inscription at the base identifies the subject and the original painter, providing context for the print as a record of a specific Venetian commission. Zucchi uses varied line weights to suggest the volume of the drapery and the metallic sheen of the armour. The shading is achieved through cross-hatching, a technique that provides depth without relying on colour. This work serves as an example of the 18th-century practice of documenting major paintings through reproductive prints, ensuring that works in private or restricted government buildings remained accessible to a wider audience of collectors and scholars. The print captures the dramatic narrative typical of Venetian religious art, maintaining the theatricality of the original Tintoretto composition while adapting it for the medium of paper.
