A detailed 1567 engraving by Dutch master Cornelis Cort, depicting Saint Francis of Assisi in a moment of spiritual encounter.
This engraving by Cornelis Cort depicts the moment Saint Francis of Assisi receives the stigmata. Cort, a Dutch master who spent his later years in Italy, was known for his technical precision in copperplate engraving. This work demonstrates his ability to translate complex tonal values into linear patterns. The composition features the saint kneeling in a rocky, uneven terrain, his gaze directed upward toward a celestial vision. A large, gnarled tree dominates the right side of the frame, acting as a vertical anchor for the scene. Above, a burst of light emanates from a seraphic figure, casting rays that illuminate the foliage and the surrounding landscape.
Cort employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the stone, the rough bark of the tree, and the folds of the saint's habit. The background reveals a distant, quiet vista, providing a sense of scale and isolation appropriate for the meditative nature of the subject. The print reflects the influence of Italian Mannerism, particularly in the elongated forms and the dramatic use of light. Cort's work was highly regarded during his lifetime for its clarity and its capacity to reproduce the painterly qualities of the original compositions he translated into print. This piece remains a fine example of sixteenth-century printmaking, where the engraver's skill is used to convey both spiritual intensity and naturalistic detail. The balance between the foreground figures and the atmospheric background creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the quiet, holy encounter.
