A detailed Dutch engraving of Saint Bartholomew, rendered with precise cross-hatching and classic Northern Mannerist technique.
This engraving by Zacharias Dolendo depicts Saint Bartholomew, presented within a circular frame. The composition focuses on the figure of the apostle, who is shown in a contemplative posture, looking down at a book held in his hands. The artist employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching to define the folds of the saint's heavy drapery and the contours of his face, creating a sense of volume and physical presence. The lines are precise, demonstrating the technical control characteristic of late sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking.
Dolendo, active in Leiden, was a skilled engraver who often worked after designs by other artists, such as Jacques de Gheyn II, whose name appears at the bottom of the plate. The work reflects the stylistic conventions of Northern Mannerism, where the emphasis lies on the expressive quality of the line and the dramatic rendering of form. The saint is identified by the inscription 'S. BARTHOLOMAVS APOSTOL' circling the upper edge of the circular border. His expression is one of quiet focus, typical of devotional imagery from this period. The use of a circular format, or tondo, was a common choice for such series, allowing for a concentrated view of the subject. The print captures the texture of the paper and the ink, providing a clear view of the engraver's method. This piece offers a look into the tradition of religious print series that were widely circulated among collectors and scholars in the Netherlands during the late Renaissance.
