This Pointillist painting by Henri-Edmond Cross depicts sailboats on the water, rendered in small, distinct dots of colour. The warm hues of the boats contrast with the cool blues of the water and sky, creating a shimmering effect.
Henri-Edmond Cross, a French painter born in Douai, is associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement. He, along with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, refined the Pointillist technique, characterised by small, distinct dots of colour applied in patterns to form an image. This method aimed to achieve maximum luminosity and colour interaction on the viewer's retina. Cross's work often depicts Mediterranean scenes, reflecting his move to the south of France in 1891. 'Sailboats' exemplifies Cross's mature Pointillist style. The composition features two sailboats dominating the foreground, their hulls rendered in warm oranges and reds, contrasting with the cool blues of the water. The sails are striped with red and white, adding a rhythmic quality to the scene. The background shows a hazy sky and distant land, created with the same meticulous dotting technique. The overall effect is one of shimmering light and atmospheric perspective, typical of Neo-Impressionist paintings.
