A 1916 modernist view of the Spanish town of Sagunto, featuring geometric architecture and a muted Mediterranean palette by Moïse Kisling.
Painted in 1916, Sagunto captures the Spanish town through the lens of early twentieth-century European modernism. Moïse Kisling, a central figure in the School of Paris, employs a structured approach to the composition, balancing geometric simplification with a distinct sense of place. The work reflects the influence of the artist's time in the Mediterranean, where he engaged with the light and architectural forms of the region.
The scene presents a collection of buildings with terracotta roofs, rendered with a deliberate, blocky geometry. A prominent palm tree stands to the left, providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal spread of the town. In the background, a blue-domed structure sits against a sky washed in muted pinks and greens. Kisling uses a palette of ochre, white, and earthy tones, which creates a cohesive atmosphere. The brushwork is controlled, avoiding excessive detail in favour of clear, defined planes that suggest the volume of the architecture.
This piece demonstrates the transition from the influence of Cézanne towards a more personal, decorative style that Kisling would refine throughout his career. The spatial arrangement is compressed, pushing the buildings forward and creating a sense of intimacy within the townscape. By focusing on the interplay between the man-made structures and the natural elements, Kisling provides a study of form that remains grounded in the physical reality of the Spanish coast. The work avoids the fragmentation of pure Cubism, opting instead for a synthesis of observation and stylistic interpretation that defines much of his output from this period.
