Johann Christian Reinhart, a German artist who spent much of his career in Rome, produced this etching in 1793. The work depicts the weathered remains of an ancient Roman tomb situated along the Via Nevia, outside the Porta Pia. During the late eighteenth century, artists frequently travelled to Italy to document the remnants of antiquity. These sites provided subjects for study, capturing the intersection of classical history and the natural environment.

Reinhart employs precise line work to define the crumbling masonry of the tomb. The texture of the stone, worn by centuries of exposure, contrasts with the soft, etched lines of the surrounding vegetation and the sky. Two oxen graze in the foreground, a common motif in Roman topographical art of the period. This inclusion provides a sense of scale and suggests the rural, pastoral state of the Roman Campagna at the time. The composition balances the architectural mass of the ruin against the open space of the surrounding terrain.

As a practitioner of the Neoclassical tradition, Reinhart focused on clarity and structural integrity. His approach to printmaking relies on a systematic application of hatching and cross-hatching to create volume and shadow. The etching reflects a scholarly interest in archaeology, documenting the physical state of the site with accuracy.
