Description
Rottingdean in Sussex looks past a dark hillside windmill towards red-roofed houses and the sea, with white cliffs and long green slopes catching the golden light beneath an orange evening sky.
Beacon Mill, built on the hill above this coastal village in 1802, once ground corn before ceasing work in 1881. The restored smock mill now serves as a prominent seamark within Beacon Hill Local Nature Reserve, overlooking the settlement and its Sussex coast setting.
At Rottingdean, four skeletal sails cross above the dark timber body of the mill. Green fields descend towards pale houses with warm red roofs, ending at a narrow beach and distant chalk cliffs. The sun hangs over the sea on the right. Gold cloud edges and long grass shadows suggest clear weather during a summer evening.
