Description
A geometric abstraction by Max Bill, featuring precise colour planes and a diamond-shaped composition.
Max Bill, a polymath of the twentieth century, was a central figure in the development of Concrete Art. His work is defined by a rigorous adherence to mathematical principles and the belief that art should be constructed from its own inherent elements, such as colour and form, rather than through the imitation of nature. Rotation um Lila is a clear expression of this philosophy. The composition is presented within a diamond format, which immediately disrupts the traditional rectangular frame of the canvas. This orientation forces the viewer to engage with the work as a dynamic object rather than a static window. The painting is composed of precisely calculated geometric planes. A large, dominant area of soft lilac occupies the upper portion, while a pale green triangle anchors the lower section. A smaller, sharp yellow form provides a contrast on the right, and a sliver of blue is visible at the left edge. These colours are applied in flat, uniform fields, eliminating any trace of the artist's brushwork or subjective gesture. By removing these personal markers, Bill allows the mathematical relationships between the shapes to dictate the visual experience. Bill was a student at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he studied under figures such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. This training instilled in him a discipline that remained consistent throughout his career. His work avoids narrative or emotional content, focusing instead on the clarity of spatial organisation. The interaction of the colours here is not intended to evoke a specific mood, but to demonstrate the logic of the composition. The result is a work that functions as a self-contained system, where every angle and hue is the result of a deliberate, rational decision. This print captures the precise colour relationships and the clean, hard-edged boundaries that define Bill's contribution to modern geometric art.
