A symbolic work by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, featuring a golden column and a sailing boat reflected in calm water.
Rex I is a work by the Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. Created in 1909, it forms part of a series of works that explore themes of cosmic order and mythic kingship. The composition is divided into distinct horizontal zones, creating a sense of layered reality that is characteristic of the artist's approach to visual art.
In the upper section, a golden, spiralling column stands against a dark background, suggesting a celestial or architectural anchor. Below this, a textured, ochre-toned band stretches across the frame, providing a grounding element. To the right, a small boat with a white sail glides across the water. The reflection of the golden column and the boat in the blue water below creates a symmetrical balance, linking the upper and lower realms of the image.
Čiurlionis often applied his musical background to his paintings, treating visual elements like notes or chords in a larger composition. The use of colour here is deliberate, with the contrast between the warm, metallic gold and the cool, deep blues of the water establishing a rhythmic visual experience. The work avoids literal representation, opting instead for a dreamlike, symbolic language that invites the viewer to interpret the relationship between the kingly figure, represented by the column, and the journey of the boat. This piece reflects the artist's interest in theosophy and the synthesis of the arts, where painting and music occupy the same conceptual space. The simplicity of the forms and the clarity of the colour fields demonstrate a move toward abstraction, which was ahead of its time in the early twentieth century.
