This drawing by Dirk Valkenburg depicts the Surimombo plantation in Suriname, a site where the artist resided between 1706 and 1707. Valkenburg travelled to the Dutch colony to document the plantation for its owner, Jonas Witsen. The work functions as a technical record, employing a precise, linear style characteristic of colonial documentation from the early eighteenth century.

The composition is organised with a clear, horizontal focus. On the right, the primary residence is rendered with attention to its timber construction, shuttered windows, and roofline. To the left, a smaller barn structure is shown, accompanied by agricultural equipment.
