A detailed 19th-century engraving by Antonio Perfetti, depicting the Holy Family in a classical, serene interpretation of the Repose in Egypt.
This engraving by Antonio Perfetti depicts the biblical scene of the Holy Family during their flight into Egypt. Perfetti, a skilled Italian engraver, translated the original composition by Pietro da Cortona into a monochromatic medium with technical precision. The scene shows the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and Saint Joseph resting near a stone structure. They are attended by two angels who offer sustenance, while a donkey and an elephant occupy the background, adding an exotic touch to the narrative. The composition follows the conventions of the period, balancing the figures within a structured, classical arrangement. Perfetti employs a range of tonal values to define the drapery of the garments, the soft forms of the figures, and the textures of the surrounding environment. The inclusion of Latin text and a coat of arms at the base indicates the print was produced as a formal commission or a presentation piece for a patron. As an engraver, Perfetti was known for his ability to replicate the nuances of painting through the use of line and cross-hatching. This work demonstrates his command over the burin, creating smooth transitions between light and shadow. The figures exhibit the idealised proportions common in Neoclassical art, with a focus on clarity and grace. The presence of the elephant, an unusual element in traditional depictions of this subject, suggests a specific iconographic choice by the original painter, which Perfetti faithfully rendered in his print. This piece offers a glimpse into the high level of craftsmanship associated with 19th-century Italian printmaking, where the reproduction of master paintings was a primary method for disseminating art to a wider audience.
