A decorative illustration by Bernard Willem Wierink depicting a scene from the medieval epic Van den vos Reynaerde, featuring the fox before King Nobel.
This illustration by Bernard Willem Wierink depicts a scene from the medieval Dutch epic, Van den vos Reynaerde. The composition shows the cunning fox, Reynaert, standing before King Nobel, the lion, who is surrounded by his court of animals. Wierink employs a decorative approach, integrating the narrative figures with stylised, geometric architectural elements and ornamental borders that reflect the influence of the Art Nouveau movement.
The work is structured as a manuscript page, featuring Middle Dutch text inscribed in a calligraphic hand. The figures are rendered with a combination of precise line work and muted watercolour washes, creating a balance between the narrative action and the graphic design of the page. The upper section contains the primary scene, while the lower portion is dedicated to the text, framed by repeating patterns and smaller animal motifs. Wierink, a Dutch artist known for his work in book illustration and decorative arts, demonstrates a clear interest in historical themes and the aesthetic qualities of medieval illuminated manuscripts.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones, ochre, and soft blues to maintain the antique character of the piece. The arrangement of the animals, particularly the central figure of the lion, provides a sense of hierarchy and order, contrasting with the agile, upright posture of the fox. This piece is a representative example of early twentieth-century Dutch illustration, where artists sought to revive the visual language of the past through a modern, stylised lens. The integration of text and image suggests a focus on the book as a unified object, where the decorative elements serve to frame the story rather than distract from it.
