Description
A mid-century abstract composition by Patrick Heron, focusing on the spatial interaction of red and yellow colour planes.
Patrick Heron, a central figure in the St Ives School, produced this work during a period of transition towards pure abstraction. The composition relies on the interaction of colour planes, where the physical application of paint remains visible. Heron often spoke of the autonomy of colour, suggesting that hues possess their own spatial weight and energy. In this piece, the dominant field of red acts as a container for smaller, geometric forms in yellow and ochre. The brushwork is deliberate, showing the texture of the medium as it drags across the surface. By avoiding traditional perspective, Heron forces the viewer to engage with the flat surface of the canvas. The edges of the forms are soft, allowing the colours to bleed into one another, which creates a sense of movement within the static frame. This approach reflects his interest in the way light and colour operate independently of representational subject matter. Heron's work from the late 1950s often explored these soft-edged shapes, which he referred to as 'wobbly' squares or rectangles. These forms do not sit rigidly on the background but appear to float or vibrate against the red ground. The horizontal line cutting across the centre provides a subtle anchor, balancing the distribution of the heavier blocks of colour. This print captures the tactile quality of the original oil painting, preserving the variations in paint density and the specific tonal relationships that define Heron's mid-century output. It is a study in the economy of form, where the relationship between two primary colours dictates the entire visual experience.
