A dreamlike, symbolic composition by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, featuring a ghostly figure hovering over a fantastical, ethereal city.
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was a Lithuanian composer and painter whose work occupies a unique position in early twentieth-century European art. His creative output often bridged the gap between visual media and musical structure, as seen in this work from his Rex cycle. The composition functions as a visual interpretation of a musical prelude, where ethereal forms and architectural silhouettes emerge from a dreamlike atmosphere.
The painting depicts a sprawling, fantastical city rendered in muted, earthy tones. A ghostly, translucent figure, reminiscent of a horse or a mythical creature, dominates the centre of the frame, hovering above the urban structures. The architecture itself is a blend of gothic spires, fortress walls, and abstract shapes that suggest a city built of light or memory. The foreground is anchored by dark, heavy masses that frame the scene, creating a sense of looking through a window into another realm.
Čiurlionis employed tempera to achieve a matte, atmospheric quality that suits his otherworldly subject matter. His approach to space is non-traditional, favouring a layered, almost stage-like arrangement that prioritises mood over linear perspective. The sky is heavy with dark, swirling clouds, providing a stark contrast to the pale, glowing city below. This work reflects the artist's interest in theosophy and mythology, themes that permeated his later paintings. By synthesising musical concepts with visual symbolism, he created a personal language that remains distinct within the Symbolist movement. The lack of clear narrative allows the viewer to engage with the image as a purely sensory experience, much like listening to a piece of music without a specific programme.
