Tanjé, a skilled engraver based in Amsterdam, utilised the burin to create precise tonal variations, defining the textures of the subject's periwig, the heavy fabric of his coat, and the delicate lace at his cuffs. The portrait follows the conventions of the period, placing the sitter within an oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth.

Above the oval, a coat of arms is integrated into the architectural surround, providing a sense of status and lineage. To the right of the sitter, a glimpse of a cityscape is visible, suggesting the urban environment in which Muilman operated. The inclusion of a document held in his hand serves as a common iconographic device in portraiture of this era, indicating the subject's professional engagement or intellectual pursuits.
