A formal eighteenth-century engraving by Pieter Tanjé, depicting Wigbold Muilman within an architectural frame.
This engraving by Pieter Tanjé depicts Wigbold Muilman, a figure of the Dutch eighteenth-century mercantile class. Tanjé, a skilled engraver based in Amsterdam, utilised the burin to create precise tonal variations, defining the textures of the subject's periwig, the heavy fabric of his coat, and the delicate lace at his cuffs. The portrait follows the conventions of the period, placing the sitter within an oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth.
Above the oval, a coat of arms is integrated into the architectural surround, providing a sense of status and lineage. To the right of the sitter, a glimpse of a cityscape is visible, suggesting the urban environment in which Muilman operated. The inclusion of a document held in his hand serves as a common iconographic device in portraiture of this era, indicating the subject's professional engagement or intellectual pursuits.
The composition is balanced and formal, typical of the mid-eighteenth-century Dutch school of printmaking. Tanjé demonstrates technical control through the use of cross-hatching and stippling to model the facial features and the drapery. The empty cartouche at the base of the frame was intended for an inscription, a standard feature in commemorative or biographical prints of the time. This work provides a clear example of the formal portraiture produced for the Dutch bourgeoisie, reflecting the aesthetic values of the period through its structured framing and attention to detail.
