A formal 17th-century Dutch portrait by Cornelis van der Voort, featuring Maria Overrijn van Schoterbosch in traditional black attire with a large lace ruff.
Cornelis van der Voort was a prominent portrait painter in Amsterdam during the early 17th century. This work depicts Maria Overrijn van Schoterbosch, a subject rendered with the technical precision characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age. The composition follows the conventions of formal portraiture, placing the sitter against a dark, neutral background to focus attention on her features and attire.
Maria is dressed in a black gown, which serves to emphasise the stark white of her large, pleated ruff and the delicate lace at her wrists. The artist captures the texture of these garments with care, distinguishing between the heavy fabric of the dress and the translucent quality of the lace. Her posture is composed, with one hand holding a folding fan and the other resting at her side, reflecting the social expectations of the period. A gold chain hangs across her bodice, providing a subtle contrast to the monochromatic palette of her clothing.
Van der Voort demonstrates a keen ability to render light and shadow, which gives the figure a sense of physical presence. The lighting is directed to illuminate the face and the ruff, drawing the viewer into the sitter's steady gaze. This portrait provides a clear view of the fashion and social status of the Dutch elite during the early 1600s. The painting is a representative example of the sober, refined style that defined the work of Amsterdam portraitists before the more dramatic shifts in Dutch painting later in the century. The attention to detail in the jewellery and the lace collar reveals the status of the subject, while the restrained colour scheme maintains a sense of decorum and gravity.
