A refined eighteenth-century portrait engraving by Dutch artist Reinier Vinkeles, depicting Alexander Philip van der Capellen in military attire.
This fine portrait engraving by the Dutch artist Reinier Vinkeles depicts Alexander Philip van der Capellen. Vinkeles was a prolific draughtsman and engraver based in Amsterdam, known for his technical precision and his contributions to the documentation of Dutch society during the late eighteenth century. The work exemplifies the formal portraiture style of the period, utilising a refined oval frame set against a cross-hatched rectangular background. The subject is presented in a military uniform, reflecting his status and professional identity. The artist employs delicate line work to capture the texture of the fabric and the subtle modelling of the facial features. Below the portrait, a decorative tablet featuring a festoon motif adds a classical touch, a common element in the print culture of the era. The composition is balanced and restrained, adhering to the aesthetic principles of Neoclassicism, which favoured clarity, order, and a focus on the individual subject. Reinier Vinkeles produced a vast body of work, often collaborating with other artists to create illustrations for books and historical records. His ability to render light and shadow through varied etching techniques allowed for a high degree of detail, even in small-scale portraiture. This print offers a glimpse into the visual language of the Dutch elite during a period of political and social change. The clean lines and structured composition make this piece a representative example of European printmaking from the late eighteenth century. It is a study in the formal representation of authority, capturing the sitter with a sense of composure and dignity that was highly valued in contemporary portraiture.
