A classic portrait by Moïse Kisling, featuring his signature stylised facial features and a muted, atmospheric green background.
Moïse Kisling, a central figure of the School of Paris, produced this portrait during the interwar period. The work displays his characteristic approach to the human form, defined by smooth, porcelain-like skin tones and a deliberate stylisation of facial features. The subject possesses large, almond-shaped eyes and a melancholic expression, which are hallmarks of Kisling's portraiture from this era.
The composition is tightly framed, focusing attention on the sitter's head and shoulders. Kisling employs a stark contrast between the dark, sculptural hair and the pale, luminous complexion of the subject. The decorative, textured collar provides a tactile counterpoint to the otherwise flat, smooth application of paint on the face. The background consists of a muted, brushy green wash, which prevents the figure from receding into a deep space, instead keeping the focus firmly on the psychological presence of the sitter.
Kisling moved to Paris in 1910 and became associated with the Montparnasse circle, which included artists such as Amedeo Modigliani. His technique often involved a precise, controlled brushstroke that prioritised clarity of form over painterly spontaneity. This portrait captures the aesthetic sensibilities of the 1920s, reflecting a period when artists sought to balance modern abstraction with traditional figurative representation. The deliberate simplicity of the pose and the focus on the sitter's gaze create a quiet, observational quality. This print reproduces the subtle variations in the original oil paint, from the dense, dark pigments of the hair to the delicate, stippled effect of the lace collar.
