A detailed graphite portrait of Nikolai Dmitrievich Dmitriev-Orenburg by the Russian realist Ivan Kramskoy, dated 1866.
This graphite portrait by Ivan Kramskoy depicts his contemporary, the painter Nikolai Dmitrievich Dmitriev-Orenburg. Executed in 1866, the work demonstrates the technical precision and psychological focus that defined Kramskoy’s contribution to Russian realism. The artist employs a refined use of shading to model the subject’s features, capturing a direct, steady gaze that engages the viewer. The treatment of the beard and hair shows a meticulous approach to texture, while the background remains simple to ensure the focus stays on the sitter’s expression.
Kramskoy was a central figure in the Peredvizhniki movement, a group of Russian artists who sought to bring art to the public through travelling exhibitions. His portraiture often moved away from the formal, rigid styles of the Imperial Academy, favouring a more honest and humanistic representation of his subjects. This drawing is an example of his ability to convey character through subtle tonal shifts rather than elaborate staging. The signature and date are clearly visible in the lower right corner, providing a firm anchor for the work within his early career.
As a fine art print, this piece retains the delicate quality of the original graphite marks. The monochrome palette allows for a versatile display in various interior settings, where the strength of the composition provides a quiet, intellectual presence. It is a study in the craft of 19th-century portraiture, reflecting the artist’s dedication to capturing the individual spirit of his peers.
