Description
An eighteenth-century Dutch engraving featuring a portrait of the naturalist Pieter Lyonet alongside Matheus Verheyden and Jan George Freezen.
This engraving, dated 1751, presents a composite portrait featuring the Dutch naturalist and engraver Pieter Lyonet alongside his contemporaries, Matheus Verheyden and Jan George Freezen. The work is executed with the precision characteristic of eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking, employing fine cross-hatching to define the facial features, powdered wigs, and period attire of the subjects. The composition is structured within a formal architectural frame, creating a sense of depth through the layering of the portraits. The upper section displays a larger, oval-framed bust of Lyonet, while the lower portion contains two smaller, rectangular portraits of Verheyden and Freezen, presented as if they are sheets of paper resting against the base of the frame. This arrangement reflects the conventions of eighteenth-century biographical collections, where multiple figures were often grouped to document the appearance of notable scholars and artists of the era. Pieter Lyonet was a polymath, known primarily for his anatomical studies of insects, particularly his detailed work on the goat moth caterpillar. His scientific rigour is mirrored in the technical clarity of this print. The engraving was executed by Pieter Tanjé, a skilled Dutch printmaker, based on drawings by Matheus Verheyden and Aart Schouman. The attention to light and shadow, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the subtle modelling of the faces, demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship expected in Dutch portraiture of the mid-eighteenth century. The print serves as a historical record of these three figures, capturing the formal aesthetic and social presentation of the Dutch intellectual class during the Enlightenment period.
