Description
A 1557 oil portrait by Sofonisba Anguissola depicting the young Marquis of Soncino in formal mourning attire.
Sofonisba Anguissola painted this full-length portrait in 1557. It depicts Massimiliano Stampa, the third Marquis of Soncino, at approximately nine years of age. The commission followed the death of his father in the same year, which explains the boy's formal black attire. This work is one of the earliest examples of a full-length portrait of a child in Italian art, a format previously reserved for adult rulers or high-ranking aristocrats. The composition places the young marquis against a plain green background, leaning against a classical marble column. He wears a black doublet, trunk hose, and tights, accented by a small white ruff at his neck. A sword hangs at his side, signifying his inherited status and responsibilities. At his feet, a brown and white dog sleeps, providing a domestic contrast to the formal posture of the subject. The inclusion of the dog may also symbolise fidelity or the transition from childhood to the duties of his station. Anguissola captures a specific psychological state in the sitter. The boy's expression is sombre and watchful, reflecting the weight of his new title. The artist uses a restrained colour palette dominated by black, white, and green. Her attention to the textures of the fabric and the cold surface of the marble demonstrates her technical skill. The marble pedestal features a diamond pattern in warm tones, which provides a visual break from the cool green of the wall. This painting helped establish Anguissola's reputation as a portraitist before she moved to the Spanish court of Philip II. As a female artist in the sixteenth century, her success in securing such high-profile commissions was unusual. Her ability to convey both the social status and the internal life of her subjects made her work sought after by the European nobility.
