A masterful eighteenth-century pastel portrait of King Louis XV, capturing the monarch with remarkable psychological depth and technical precision.
Maurice Quentin de La Tour was a master of the pastel medium, a technique he elevated to unprecedented heights during the eighteenth century. This portrait of King Louis XV captures the monarch with a psychological acuity that defined the artist's career. Unlike the formal, rigid state portraits common to the era, La Tour focuses on the individual behind the crown. His ability to render the texture of skin, the sheen of polished steel armour, and the soft quality of the ermine-lined mantle demonstrates his technical precision.
The composition balances the regal requirements of the subject with a sense of personal presence. The King is depicted in his role as a military leader, wearing armour adorned with the fleur-de-lis, yet his expression remains composed and approachable. La Tour utilised the powdery nature of pastel to create subtle transitions in tone, particularly around the eyes and mouth, which provide the subject with a lifelike quality. The blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit provides a colour contrast against the metallic grey of the breastplate and the neutral background.
La Tour was known for his demanding process, often requiring many sittings to capture the character of his subjects. This work reflects the refined aesthetic of the French Rococo period, where elegance and clarity were prioritised. The artist's focus on the sitter's humanity, rather than merely his status, allowed him to become the premier portraitist of the French court. This print reproduces the delicate layering of the original pastel, preserving the soft transitions and the luminous quality of the pigments. It offers a view into the personal image of a monarch who dominated the political and cultural life of France for over half a century.
