A 1931 portrait by Pyotr Konchalovsky depicting a young girl seated on a patterned carpet with her toys, rendered in a bold, painterly style.
Pyotr Konchalovsky, a founding member of the Knave of Diamonds group, painted this portrait of Kamushka Benediktova in 1931. The work captures the subject seated on a patterned carpet, surrounded by an assortment of toys. Konchalovsky employs a direct, painterly approach, using visible brushwork to define the forms of the child and the surrounding objects. The composition is grounded by the central figure, whose bright red dress provides a strong visual anchor against the darker, more muted tones of the floor covering. The artist avoids excessive detail, preferring to focus on the weight and texture of the paint. The background features a dense, floral-like arrangement that creates a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective. Konchalovsky's style during this period reflects his transition from the early avant-garde influences of Cézanne and Fauvism toward a more grounded, representational mode of painting. The toys, including a doll and various figures, are rendered with a similar economy of stroke, contributing to the overall unity of the scene. This portrait demonstrates the artist's ability to balance domestic subject matter with a rigorous formal structure. The colour palette is dominated by the contrast between the saturated red of the dress and the deep, earthy tones of the carpet and background. By placing the child directly on the floor, Konchalovsky creates an intimate, informal atmosphere. The work remains a clear example of his mature style, where the physical application of oil paint is as much a subject of the work as the sitter herself.
