A 1897 oil portrait by Andrei Ryabushkin depicting the writer I. F. Tyumenev in a dimly lit, contemplative interior setting.
Andrei Ryabushkin, a painter associated with the Peredvizhniki movement, produced this portrait of the composer and writer I. F. Tyumenev in 1897. The work captures the subject in a seated pose, set against a dark, atmospheric interior. The composition relies on a restricted palette, where the pale tones of the subject's clothing contrast with the deep shadows of the room.
Ryabushkin employs a loose, painterly technique that focuses on the psychological presence of the sitter. The lighting, provided by candles on the desk, creates a sense of intimacy and quiet contemplation. The surrounding objects, including books and papers, suggest a scholarly or creative environment. This portrait avoids the rigid formality often found in late nineteenth-century academic painting, opting instead for a more direct and observational approach.
The artist is better known for his historical genre scenes depicting seventeenth-century Russian life, yet this portrait demonstrates his ability to render contemporary figures with equal sensitivity. The brushwork remains visible, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the background, which adds a tactile quality to the surface of the canvas. The subject, Tyumenev, appears relaxed, with his legs crossed and hands resting in his lap, conveying a sense of ease within his personal space. This piece offers a glimpse into the intellectual circles of the period, reflecting the artist's interest in the character of his contemporaries. The work is held in the collection of the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg.
